pair off
Split into duos
To pair off is to form couples or pairs, typically separating from a larger group.
The phrase often describes romantic coupling: One by one, my college friends paired off and got married.
It can also apply to non-romantic groupings: The students paired off for the lab assignment.
Things that pair off match up or get sorted into twos.
