opioid withdrawal

Narcotic cessation syndrome

Opioid withdrawal is the constellation of symptoms that occur when someone dependent on opioids stops taking them or drastically reduces their dose.

Symptoms include muscle aches, sweating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, anxiety, and intense cravings—beginning within hours of the last dose and peaking around two to three days.

Though extremely uncomfortable and sometimes described as the worst flu imaginable, opioid withdrawal is rarely life-threatening in otherwise healthy adults.
