old man's beard

Hanging tree growth

Old man's beard is a common name for several plants with long, trailing, hair-like growths.

It most often refers to Spanish moss, the gray epiphyte that drapes from trees in the American South, or to clematis vines with feathery seed heads.

The name also applies to certain lichens that hang in wispy strands from branches: The oaks were festooned with old man's beard.
