odd couples
Mismatched romantic partners
An odd couple is a pair of people who seem mismatched or incompatible but who nonetheless form a friendship, partnership, or romantic relationship.
The term gained currency from Neil Simon's 1965 play about two divorced men—one fastidiously neat, the other hopelessly messy—who become roommates.
The phrase now applies broadly to any unlikely pairing: My cat and the neighbor's dog have become an odd couple.
Odd couples often appear in entertainment as a comedic device.
