nonliterate

Lacking written language

Nonliterate describes a person or culture without a written language or reading ability.

Unlike illiterate, which implies failure to learn an available skill, nonliterate is neutral—often applied to oral cultures that transmit knowledge through speech and memory rather than text: nonliterate societies, nonliterate traditions.
