new boy

Recently joined member

A new boy is someone recently arrived in a position, organization, or field—originally a student newly enrolled at a school, now extended to any newcomer learning the ropes: As the new boy on the team, he kept quiet in meetings.

The term carries connotations of inexperience and unfamiliarity with established ways.

Though gendered in form, it applies to anyone.

The parallel *new girl* exists but is less common.
