neonatal jaundice
Infant bilirubin buildup
Neonatal jaundice is yellowing of a newborn's skin and eyes caused by elevated bilirubin in the blood.
The liver of a newborn is often not yet efficient at processing bilirubin, a byproduct of red blood cell breakdown.
Most cases resolve within a week or two; severe cases may require phototherapy or other treatment to prevent brain damage.
