narco state
Drug-funded regime
A narco state is a country whose government, economy, or institutions are deeply infiltrated or controlled by drug trafficking organizations.
The term implies that narcotics money has corrupted law enforcement, politics, and legitimate business to the point where the state effectively serves cartel interests: Critics called the country a narco state after the president's brother was arrested for trafficking.
The label is often applied polemically to countries in Latin America and Central Asia.
