naked as a jay-bird

Wearing absolutely nothing

Completely naked, without any clothing at all.

The expression is folksy and often humorous, typically describing someone caught undressed or deliberately stripped bare: The kids ran through the sprinklers naked as a jay-bird.

Why jaybirds—which have feathers—became the standard of nakedness is unclear, but the phrase has been common in American English since the nineteenth century.
