mulch bed
Covered planting area
A mulch bed is a garden area covered with a layer of organic or inorganic material—wood chips, bark, straw, or gravel—spread over the soil to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate temperature.
The term distinguishes these areas from grass lawns or bare soil: We planted hostas in the mulch bed along the fence.
