lucked out
Caught a break
Lucked out means to have unexpected good fortune, to get lucky: We lucked out and found a parking spot right in front.
The phrase can cause confusion because "out" sometimes signals failure (as in "struck out"), but in American English, lucking out is unambiguously positive.
British English occasionally uses it to mean the opposite—running out of luck—though this is less common.
