lucifer

Strike-anywhere fire starter

A lucifer is an old-fashioned term for a friction match—the kind struck against a rough surface to produce flame.

The word comes from Latin meaning "light-bearer," which explains its application to early matches: He struck a lucifer and lit his pipe.

The term was common in the 19th century but is now archaic. (Capitalized Lucifer is the devil.)
