lost highway
Abandoned road nowhere
A lost highway is a road that leads nowhere meaningful—literally a route abandoned or forgotten, figuratively a path of self-destruction or aimless wandering.
The phrase carries American mythic weight, evoking desolate stretches of asphalt and lives gone astray: He's been on a lost highway since the divorce.
Country music and film noir have cemented the image of someone driving through darkness with no destination.
