long-distance call
Remote phone connection
A long-distance call is a telephone call to someone outside your local calling area—historically charged at higher rates than local calls.
Before cell phones and internet calling made distance irrelevant to pricing, long-distance was a significant household expense: We kept long-distance calls short because of the cost.
The term persists but increasingly sounds dated.
