life preservers
Emergency buoyancy aids
Life preservers are buoyant devices designed to keep a person afloat in water—the ring-shaped flotation devices thrown to drowning swimmers, or the vest-style equipment worn on boats and aircraft.
In British usage, a life preserver is a weighted club used as a weapon, from an older sense of preserving one's life against attackers.
