lay-off

Workforce reduction action

A lay-off is the termination of employment, typically because the employer no longer needs the position rather than because the employee performed poorly: The company announced mass lay-offs after losing the contract.

The term softens what is essentially being fired for economic reasons.

Also spelled layoff.

To lay off workers is to dismiss them this way; to lay off something informally means to stop doing it: Lay off the junk food.
