late lamented

Mourned and gone

Late lamented describes someone who has died and is mourned or missed.

The phrase is somewhat formal and often appears in obituaries or memorial contexts: the late lamented founder of our organization.

It can also be used with gentle irony about things that no longer exist: the late lamented corner bookshop.
