society drama
Upper-class theatrical conflict
A society drama is a film, play, or television series centered on the lives, intrigues, and scandals of wealthy or aristocratic characters.
The genre emphasizes social hierarchy, romantic entanglements, and the tensions between public propriety and private behavior: Downton Abbey is the quintessential society drama.
The appeal lies in glimpsing how the other half lives—or lived.
