kitchen debate
Cold War exchange
The Kitchen Debate was a 1959 impromptu exchange between U.S.
Vice President Richard Nixon and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev at an American exhibition in Moscow.
Standing in a model American kitchen, they sparred over capitalism versus communism, using household appliances as symbols of their competing systems.
The phrase sometimes appears in lowercase to describe any heated domestic-setting argument: We had our own kitchen debate about the renovation budget.
