jumping the shark

Show starts failing

Jumping the shark describes the moment when something—typically a TV show, franchise, or creative work—begins an irreversible decline in quality, often by introducing a gimmick or absurd plot development.

The phrase comes from a 1977 episode of *Happy Days* in which the Fonz literally jumped over a shark on water skis, widely seen as a desperate ratings ploy.

The show jumped the shark when they added a talking baby.

Now applied broadly to anything past its prime that resorts to increasingly desperate measures.
