ink wells
Desk-mounted liquid holders
An ink well is a small container, often built into a desk, that holds ink for dipping a pen.
Before fountain pens and ballpoints, writers repeatedly dipped their nibs into ink wells.
The term evokes old schoolrooms and antique writing desks: The wooden desk had a brass ink well in one corner.
