impossible staircase

Endless ascending loop

An impossible staircase is a visual illusion depicting stairs that appear to ascend or descend endlessly while returning to their starting point—a structure that defies physical reality.

The most famous version is the Penrose stairs, popularized by M.C.

Escher's lithograph *Ascending and Descending*.

The term extends to any paradoxical loop: The project became an impossible staircase of approvals, each step leading back to the beginning.
