imperial stout

Potent black ale

Imperial stout is a strong, dark beer with intense roasted malt flavors, high alcohol content, and a thick, almost syrupy body.

The style originated in 18th-century England for export to the Russian imperial court, which preferred more potent brews that could survive the journey.

Modern craft versions often feature notes of chocolate, coffee, and dark fruit: We split a bottle of bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout.
