hyperpower

Beyond mere superpower

A hyperpower is a nation whose dominance so far exceeds other major powers that it stands in a class by itself.

The term emerged in the 1990s to describe the United States after the Soviet Union's collapse, when American military, economic, and cultural influence had no serious rival.

Unlike a superpower, which implies competition among peers, hyperpower suggests unipolar dominance: For a brief moment, the U.S. was the world's sole hyperpower.
