hot-swapping
Replacing without shutdown
Hot-swapping is replacing a component while a system remains running, without shutting down or rebooting.
The term comes from computing, where hard drives or memory can be swapped without powering off: The server supports hot-swapping, so we replaced the failed drive without any downtime.
The concept extends to any situation where you substitute one thing for another without interruption: We're hot-swapping the lead actor between scenes.
