home fronts
Domestic wartime zones
Home fronts is the plural of home front, the civilian population and domestic territory of a nation at war.
The term emerged from world wars, when governments mobilized entire societies—rationing food, converting factories, recruiting women into the workforce.
While soldiers fought abroad, the home fronts kept economies running.
The phrase now applies to any domestic dimension of a larger struggle: The pandemic's home front included supply shortages and hospital overcrowding.
