holding notes
Sustaining musical sounds
Holding notes are sustained tones in music, played or sung for their full written duration or longer while other parts move around them.
A singer holds a note at the climax of a ballad; an organist sustains bass notes beneath changing harmonies.
The technique creates tension, resolution, or dramatic effect: She brought the house down holding that final note for eight bars.
