hockey mom

Arena sideline parent

A hockey mom is a mother devoted to supporting her child's hockey activities—driving to early-morning practices, sitting through games, managing equipment.

The term extends to any intensely involved sports parent, but hockey's demanding schedule (ice time at dawn, travel leagues, expensive gear) makes it the prototype.

In American politics, hockey mom became shorthand for middle-class suburban mothers, especially after Sarah Palin's 2008 claim that the only difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull is lipstick.
