high sheriff
Top county lawman
High sheriff is the senior ceremonial officer of a county or shire in England, Wales, and some Commonwealth countries.
The position dates to medieval times when sheriffs held significant judicial and administrative power, but today the role is largely honorary—attending court openings, supporting the judiciary, and representing the Crown at local events.
The high sheriff welcomed the visiting judge to the county.
