high muckamuck

Self-important leader

High muckamuck is a person of importance or authority, often used mockingly to deflate someone's self-importance: The high muckamucks in the front office never listen to us.

The term comes from Chinook Jargon, where it originally meant "plenty to eat"—a sign of wealth.

Also spelled high muckety-muck or high mucka-muck.
