harrowed
Tormented and anguished
Harrowed describes a state of acute distress or torment.
A harrowed expression shows someone who has been through suffering; a harrowed mind is one that has been deeply troubled.
The word comes from the agricultural harrow—a frame with spikes dragged across soil to break it up—so to be harrowed is to feel torn up, wounded by experience: Her harrowed face told the story of sleepless nights.
