hand spinning

Fiber twisting craft

Hand spinning is the craft of twisting fibers into yarn or thread using manual tools rather than industrial machinery.

The spinner draws out fibers—wool, cotton, flax, silk—and twists them together, traditionally using a spindle or spinning wheel.

The practice predates mechanized textile production by thousands of years and continues as both a traditional craft and a hobby: She learned hand spinning from her grandmother.

Hand-spun yarn tends to be irregular and textured compared to machine-made alternatives.
