half asleep
Drifting off slowly
Half asleep describes the drowsy state between waking and sleeping—conscious but barely functional.
Someone half asleep hasn't fully emerged from sleep or is drifting toward it: I was half asleep when the phone rang.
It can also suggest inattentiveness: The students sat half asleep through the lecture.
