half-free
Not fully released
Half-free describes a state of partial liberty—neither fully enslaved nor fully autonomous.
The term appears in historical contexts for people with restricted rights: serfs who could farm their own land but couldn't leave it, or freedmen still bound by legal constraints.
More loosely, anything operating under significant limitations while retaining some independence: The territory was half-free, governing itself but paying tribute to the empire.
