growing out of

Maturing beyond something

Growing out of describes something that develops from or has its origins in something else: Her interest in medicine grew out of childhood visits to her grandmother's clinic.

It also refers literally to becoming too large for clothing or spaces: He's growing out of his shoes already.

A third sense describes outgrowing a phase or habit: She's finally growing out of that rebellious stage.
