grandmother clocks
Smaller grandfather timepieces
A grandmother clock is a floor-standing pendulum clock similar to a grandfather clock but shorter, typically standing between five and six feet tall.
The diminutive name follows the family metaphor—granddaughter clocks are smaller still.
Like their taller relatives, grandmother clocks display decorative wooden cases and chiming mechanisms: The grandmother clock in the hallway chimed every quarter hour.
