golden goals
Sudden-death match-enders
Golden goals are goals in soccer (football) that immediately end a match during extra time—whoever scores first wins.
The rule was used in major tournaments from the 1990s through early 2000s but proved controversial because teams played too cautiously, fearing a single mistake would end everything.
FIFA abandoned it in 2004.
The term now sometimes describes any decisive, game-winning goal: He scored the golden goal in the final minute.
