gold-standard
Paragon of excellence
Gold-standard describes something that serves as the benchmark against which all others in its category are measured: Randomized controlled trials remain the gold-standard method for clinical research.
The term comes from the monetary system in which currency was backed by gold reserves—a fixed, reliable measure of value.
Now used attributively to mean best, most reliable, or most authoritative: the gold-standard treatment for the disease.
