getting open

Creating receiving space

Getting open is creating separation from a defender in sports, especially basketball and football, to receive a pass.

A player gets open by cutting, setting screens, or using quick footwork: He's great at getting open in the red zone.

The skill combines spatial awareness with timing—being in the right place when the ball arrives.
