geologic map
Subsurface formation diagram
A geologic map shows the distribution and characteristics of rock formations, faults, and other geological features across a landscape.
Unlike topographic maps that show surface elevation, geologic maps reveal what lies beneath—the types, ages, and structures of underlying rock.
Geologists use them to locate mineral deposits, assess earthquake risks, and understand Earth's history: The geologic map showed a fault line running through the proposed building site.
