freshers' flu

University initiation illness

Freshers' flu is the wave of colds, sore throats, and general illness that sweeps through university students in the first weeks of term.

The name combines fresher (British for first-year student) with flu, though the ailments are usually common colds rather than actual influenza.

The cause is predictable: hundreds of young people from different regions suddenly sharing close quarters, late nights, and alcohol.

Half my hall has freshers' flu already.
