free-cooling
Outside air conditioning
Free-cooling is a method of cooling buildings or equipment using naturally cold outside air or water instead of mechanical refrigeration.
When outdoor temperatures drop low enough, systems bypass energy-intensive compressors and use the ambient cold directly: The data center switches to free-cooling when temperatures fall below fifty degrees.
The term appears in HVAC and industrial contexts where reducing energy consumption matters.
