forgotten man
Ignored by society
The forgotten man is an ordinary citizen whose needs and interests are overlooked by those in power.
The phrase gained currency during the Great Depression, when politicians invoked it to describe working people struggling while elites prospered.
It resurfaces whenever leaders claim to champion overlooked segments of society: He promised to fight for the forgotten man.
