forced error
Induced unforced fault
A forced error in sports is a mistake by one player caused by the skill or pressure of an opponent, as opposed to an unforced error made independently.
In tennis, a shot hit into the net because of a difficult return is a forced error; missing an easy ball is unforced.
The distinction matters in statistics and game analysis: She won the match by forcing errors rather than hitting winners.
