folklore legends

Passed-down mythic stories

Folklore legends are traditional narratives passed down through generations, typically rooted in a specific place or culture and often featuring historical or semi-historical figures.

Unlike myths, which explain cosmic origins, legends claim some basis in fact—though embellished over time: Paul Bunyan is an American folklore legend, the folklore legends of King Arthur.

The phrase is somewhat redundant, as legends are already a category of folklore.
