foggy coast
Hazy maritime edge
A foggy coast is a shoreline where fog frequently settles, often where cold ocean currents meet warmer air.
The term describes both the physical phenomenon and a mood—mysterious, atmospheric, slightly melancholy: We drove along the foggy coast, unable to see more than twenty feet ahead.
Some regions are famous for it: Northern California, the Pacific Northwest, coastal Maine.
