Flag drop is the initial fixed charge on a taxi meter, triggered when the driver activates it at the start of a ride.

The term comes from older meters where a mechanical flag would physically drop to begin recording the fare.

By extension, flag drop can refer to any baseline fee charged before variable costs accumulate: The flag drop is $3.50, then $2.80 per mile.
