fission bombs
Atom-splitting explosives
Fission bombs are nuclear weapons that release energy through the splitting of heavy atomic nuclei, typically uranium-235 or plutonium-239.
Also called atomic bombs or A-bombs, they were the first nuclear weapons developed and remain the simpler of the two main types—the other being fusion bombs, which use fission bombs as triggers.
The fission bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki ended World War II.
