Almost the winner
First runner-up is the competitor who finishes second in a contest, particularly in pageants and competitions where "runner-up" terminology is preferred to "second place." The phrasing distinguishes from second runner-up (third place) and so on.
If the winner cannot fulfill her duties, the first runner-up will assume the title.
