fight clubs

Underground boxing groups

Fight clubs are informal gatherings where people engage in organized bare-knuckle fighting, typically underground or unsanctioned.

The term gained currency from the 1996 novel and 1999 film *Fight Club*, which portrayed such groups as outlets for male aggression and rebellion against modern life.

Real fight clubs exist, ranging from consensual recreational violence to more dangerous arrangements.

The phrase sometimes extends metaphorically to any secretive competitive arena: Silicon Valley has its own fight clubs where startups battle for funding.
